Forest Productivity and Timber Supply Modeling in the South

چکیده
I ABSTRACT.-The South can increase forest productivity on industrial and nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) lands. As timber markets have improved and timber prices have increased, returns from intensive management are more profitable. The interaction of timber markets, inventory, and prices are analyzed in new southern timber supply models sponsored by the Southern Forest Resource Assessment Consortium (SOFAC). Current SOFAC efforts have focused on integrating southern models and model inputs with the national Renewable Resource Planning Act (RPA) timber assessment. SOFAC researchers have developed timber supply models that can analyze timber markets trends at the subregional (survey unit) level.. Growth and yield analyses prepared for the RPA indicate that substantial increases in timber productivity can occur given current technology, if fully implemented. A survey about NIPF land management practices indicates that considerable adoption of increased management intensities is projected to occur. Even higher intensities can occur on fores?.industry lands in the South. If these potentials are realized, we will be able to provide adequate pine pulpwood supplies at reasonable prices in the future. Highquality softwoods and hardwoods will be less plentiful. Hardwood timber supply will be relatively scarcer in the future, as reflected in increasing real prices, despite having almost 5O?h more stanrlmg inventory than softwoods currently.

Chapter 8 Aggregate Timber Supply From the Forest to the Market
Timber supply modeling is a means of formalizing the production behavior of heterogeneous landowners managing a wide variety of forest types and vintages within a region. The critical challenge of timber supply modeling is constructing theoretically valid and empirically practical aggregate descriptions of harvest behavior. Understanding timber supply is essential for assessing tradeoffs betwee...
متن کاملModeling the Economic and Ecological Impact of Climate Change on Southern Forests
This paper describes the linkage of economic and ecological models of the southern forest ecosystems and markets to examine the potential impact of climate change. The core modeling system links the SubRegional Timber Supply (SRTS) model with PnET-II a process model of forest growth. Early results indicate significant variation in potential impact across the South based on variations in climate...
متن کاملThe Southern Timber Market to 2040
Timber market analysis of the South’s predominantly private timberland finds that the 13 southern states produce nearly 60 percent of the nation’s timber, an increase from the mi dmi d1900s. Projections with the Subregional Timber Supply model show that, despite a 67 percent increase in the area of pine plantations, the South will experience a 2 percent decline in private timberland area as oth...
متن کاملOptimal Forest Road Density Based on Skidding and Road Construction Costs in Iranian Caspian Forests
Information on the productivity, costs and applications of the logging system is a key component in the evaluation of management plans for the rehabilitation and utilization of Caspian forests. Skidding and road construction costs are expensive forest operations. Determining the optimum forest road network density is one of the most important factors in sustainable forest management. Logging me...
متن کاملThe Economics of Timber Supply: an Analytical Synthesis of Modeling Approaches
The joint supply of timber and other services from forest environments plays a central role in most forest land debates. This paper defines a general conceptual model of timber supply that provides the context for discussing both individual harvest choice and aggregate supply models. While the structure and breadth of these models has developed considerably over the last twenty years, unresolve...
